clerkenwell design week

We visited Clerkenwell Design Week yesterday; a leading independent design festival taking place every year in May.  Register yourself and visit for free this year 23-25th May.  Here’s our round-up and recommends…

Starting with Muuto’s new London showroom – opening its doors for the first time for CDW it’s a great space showcasing some of our favourite pieces.  The Connect and Outline Sofas are dressed in room-sets; blush pink meets claret red and tan leather against navy.  The colours and styling are as you’d expect from Muuto, clean, simple and inviting.  We could have happily spent the whole morning there!

Over to St John's Square we met with Shinola - the design and manufacturing brand from Detroit. Their impressive installation in conjunction with Giles Miller Studio called 'The Bolt', is made from 8,000 separate birch plywood pixels, each cut by machine, hand sanded and painted black.  Taking 5 weeks to build it really is the pop-up anchor within the square and reflects their craft philosophy - build objects to last and jobs in the process.   They have a vast array of quality goods on show from watches, leather wallets, bags and bikes, all proudly made in their US factories.  As part of CDW they are launching their brand new category - Shinola Audio.  A very handsome looking Turntable greats you as you enter. To say they have something for everyone is an understatement.

Time for a penthouse showroom we headed to Deadgood x Breather to chat with co-founder Dan Ziglam.  With a passion for product design he gave us insights into his last 10 years creating the brand.  From small beginnings and straight out of uni, Dan and his co-founder Elliot can now be proud of an impressive and award winning collection of furniture, lighting and interior 'products with personality' all designed and developed in Britain.  From their signature Scafell sofa you get a great skyline view of London and with a fresh brew of Workshop Coffee on offer, it's well worth stopping by!

With pop-ups all over the trail you have to visit the Additions Tent. From TFL collaborators One We Made Earlier to textiles by Laura Sprigg and art by Jimbobart, there is so much talent and quality wares on display, have your purse in hand as you'll be tempted!

On our way to Fabric Nightclub//Icon House of Culture we stopped off at The Corner Shop, Clerkenwell Green, to see the beautiful pop up housing two lovely brands; Waffle and ConPot.  Here lovingly crafted blankets, rugs and cushions share a space with hand cast concrete pots using British stoneware sourced from all over the UK.   Both brands have such a purist approach to design, it really was a delight to pop in and meet with them.

So there you have it, our highlights from CDW.  If you're in London and have some time it's well worth joining the trail and meeting with the design community.
