someday meets Mustard Made
A conversation about colour, courage, creating a business with your sister and the 'think x10' philosophy.
Some collaborations just make sense.
We've long admired Mustard Made for their playful approach to storage - proof that practical pieces can still spark joy. Their lockers have become icons in homes around the world, bringing colour, personality and a sense of fun to everyday living.
As we welcome Mustard Made to someday, we chatted with sisters and co-founders Becca and Jess to talk about building a global brand, designing products that last and creating homes that feel beautifully lived in.
Let's start at the beginning. Was there a moment when you realised the world didn't need more furniture - it needed better storage? Tell us about the spark that became Mustard Made.
Jess: Becca moved from London to Australia in her early 20s, so living apart has defined our relationship our entire adult lives. That's really where the story of Mustard begins, because for years we both had a shared dream of starting a business that would help us spend more time together. The real spark came in 2016 when I visited Becca in Australia after her son Ellis was born. During a long walk on the beach, we began brainstorming ideas and landed on Becca's love for vintage lockers.
Becca: I had been collecting vintage lockers for years, loving their character and potential but frustrated at how impractical they were. The moment then clicked, reimagining them to become both beautiful and practical. It felt like the perfect mix of both our strengths: Jess's experience as a fashion buyer and my background in design and working with small creative businesses.
Six months later we were in China, with baby Ellis along for the ride, and another six months after that we launched Mustard Made at our first trade show in Sydney. The real truth about Mustard is that it's not a story about lockers, it's all an elaborate plan between two sisters who won't let the size of the planet come between them.
You're sisters and co-founders. How has that relationship shaped the business? What do you each bring that the other couldn't?
Becca: With Jess’ background and experience, it helps her turn ideas into actions, build relationships and push us all forward. My passions lie in design, branding and building a business with heart and personality. From the very beginning, Mustard has been shaped around those complementary skill sets and a shared set of values.
This dynamic has also influenced how we've built our team. Our London office, where Jess is based, focuses on logistics, merchandising, wholesale and product development, while our Australian office is home to marketing, design and e-commerce.
Living long-distance and sharing a business has its challenges, but for us, it's part of the magic of Mustard. We bring different perspectives, different energy and a shared vision that's grounded in trust, mutual respect and truly wanting the best for each other and our business. It always amazes us how often we give the same answer to a question or come to the same solution to a problem, even though we're so far apart day-to-day.
Colour and practicality sits at the heart of everything you create. How do you choose new colours and what role do you think colour plays in how we experience our homes?
Jess: Colour is a huge part of our story, and every colour choice we make is deeply considered. We take our inspiration from lots of places and some of our first colours were inspired by a vintage locker Becca found on the side of the road. Now, as we've grown our rainbow, the most important thing is that we consider our lockers a family. The colours all need to work together and feel cohesive as a collection.
Rather than chasing trends, we try to think about what our customers need, and what might be missing from our rainbow. Our Ocean colour, for example, is a lovely soft, pale but dusty blue. We worked really hard to create a custom shade that would look beautiful in a baby's nursery but also wouldn't feel out of place in a living space or a cool office. All our colours have to work for a range of contexts.
Design trends come and go, but Mustard Made feels timeless. How do you balance creating products that feel fresh without chasing trends?
Becca: We always knew we wanted to create products that felt timeless. We've seen in the industry how hopping on trends can provide quick and exciting wins, but they can also date your product very quickly. Our goal was to create pieces that people would love in their homes for years, with that sense of nostalgia and utilitarianism that gives them a value that exists beyond this season's must-haves.
We put an enormous amount of energy into our products not just what you see on the outside, but the construction, the colour consistency, the packaging, making sure the build process is as breezy as possible, and so much more. We can't imagine putting that much consideration into a product only to sell it for six months before moving it to the end-of-season sale section and phasing it out. That's just not how we work.
If someone is buying their very first Mustard Made piece, which locker would you tell them to start with - and why?
Jess: If you are buying your very first Mustard locker, starting with The Skinny or The Shorty feels right. They are our two original single-door styles, representing the foundational retro design that inspired Mustard.
Sustainability isn't just about materials, it's also about creating products people keep. How do you think about longevity when you're designing something new?
Becca: Longevity is really the starting point for us. When we're designing something new, we're not chasing trends and we think carefully about whether a product has a timeless place in someone's home, because we want it to stay with them through different seasons of their life.
This mindset shapes practical decisions too. We invest heavily in spare parts rather than replacing whole products when something's damaged, because a small fix keeps a product in someone's life for longer, and it means less waste overall. We also offer swatches before people buy, so customers can make a decision right from the start, which means fewer returns.
You've built a global business from a simple idea. Looking back, was there a decision that felt risky at the time but completely changed the direction of the brand?
Becca: One of our philosophies at Mustard is to 'think x 10' - it's our way of asking ourselves 'if Mustard was 10 times bigger, would this process, system or approach still work?' It's something we learned really early on in our business journey when I was considering managing our product warehousing from a shipping container in my backyard. It feels ridiculous now, but at that point, engaging with a third-party logistics provider felt like a really huge step. Luckily, we did take the leap and signed on with our Australian 3PL, because our ability to meet demand and scale the business would have been significantly restricted if we had attempted to manage our warehousing in-house. That one decision really set the direction for everything that followed and 'think x 10' is our reminder to back ourselves. It's saved us so many headaches and allowed Mustard to grow and expand globally.
What's something people might be surprised to learn about running a product-based business?
Jess: I think people would be surprised by just how much is completely out of your control when it comes to global freight. We’ve had a fire on one boat, the crew on another got Covid, we've had delays because of union disputes and shortages of containers; we even had a container of lockers stuck in the Suez Canal blockage. But we've become pretty good at taking a deep breath and having a laugh about it - better to focus on the things we can control!
We love brands that celebrate everyday beauty. What everyday ritual or corner of your own home brings you the most joy?
Jess: We’ve recently done a full renovation on our home and I have tried to create as many spaces as possible that bring me joy. It is really important to me that my home feels calm, that when you walk in you can breathe. Running Mustard, having two kids and a busy life in London, home is where we eat, sleep and chill as a family. It's our little piece of heaven in the middle of it all.
I have to say though, that our bedroom is my favourite room in the house. I just love the warmth of the space; from the colour on the walls, the floral ceiling rose, velvet curtains, rattan bed, bespoke wardrobes and the boucle carpet. This room feels most "us". It's where I rest every night and come to life every morning. It's my happy place!
If Mustard Made had to be described in just three words, what would they be? And would your sister choose the same three?
Becca: Colourful, creative and a little unexpected.
Jess: As a brand, totally agree. Mustard business is considered, caring and challenging! A lot of words beginning with C!
Quick fire question round:
- Minimalist or maximalist?
Becca: I love a calm space but ultimately I fall on the side of maximalist (which is why I love/need lockers!)
Jess: Minimalist in quantity, maximalist tendencies with colour.
- Favourite Mustard colour?
Becca: Olive, my first love.
Jess: Poppy was named after my daughter so that wins!
- The locker everyone should own?
Becca: The Skinny is the ultimate, most iconic locker. The storage to floorspace ratio is a gamechanger and a line up of multiple Skinnys in a row is going to transform your space.
- One object in your home you'd never part with?
Jess: My bed! It's my favourite place to be!
Becca: My polaroids and photobooth strips are my most treasured possessions.
- Current design obsession?
Becca: I'm about to start a huge renovation of my home so my head is filled with colourful metal staircases, colour-drenched bathrooms and interesting tiles.
Jess: Apparently red shoes are now all I wear!
- Most-used room in the house?
Becca: It's winter so we've been getting cosy around the wood burning fireplace most nights. I've rekindled my love of Rummikub.
Jess: Our kitchen is where most of the action happens in our home, it's such a bright and happy place to be.
- One word that sums up home?
Jess: My bubble.
Becca: (in need of) Renovation!
- Which locker has surprised you the most?
We're always surprised by the unusual ways lockers get used, from pet clothes to motorbike helmets! Our products are designed to be versatile and that's one of our favourite things about them.
- What’s next for Mustard Made?
We're working on a unique partnership that is going to break the mould and some new products for 2027 that have been the hardest, most challenging products to create yet! Mustard has been evolving as we reach our 9th year, our brand has grown up and so have we. This business has been constantly challenging, always inspiring and truly a very special thing to build together.
At Someday Designs, we believe the best homes are built slowly - with pieces that are beautiful, functional and made to be loved for years to come. It's exactly why we're so excited to welcome Mustard Made to our collection.
We can't wait to see how you make them your own.
